Hackathon Challenge

What makes a city ‘smart’?

Have ideas on how to improve your city through tech? Come join this hack day focused on designing and prototyping ideas to make a city more efficient and enjoyable.

Ideas we’ve seen in the past include:

  • Apps to optimise the use of the city’s limited parking spaces
  • Sensors on windshields to identify locations of trees that need trimming
  • Leveraging data to optimise bus routes
  • Intelligent maps that notify users of safe walkways home based on crime and other data

The Tech Nation Visa Alumni Group has organized this hack day in partnership with our sponsors Entrepreneur First and CompareTheMarket.com. In addition to Visa Alumni this hack day is open to anyone interested in the enhancement of our cities through tech.

If you haven’t done a hackathon before or aren’t a developer, don’t worry – this hack day welcomes all levels of hack experience and a range of skill sets; please be sure to note your background when submitting an application to join.

FAQ

Teams will be judged on following four criteria.

  • Technical Feasibility: How technically impressive was the hack? Was the technical problem the team tackled difficult? Did the team put thought into the user experience?
  • Business Potential: Does the project has business potential? Is it scalable?
  • Innovation/Originality: How innovative / creative / unique is the idea? Was there a novel approach applied to solve the problem?
  • Impressiveness/Polish: How polished is your demo? Do you have a story board or a prototype or a working demo?

It is left to the team to decide what is the best way to present their idea and satisfy judging criteria.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a team. We will help you form a team, do make sure to join our happy hour pre event on 15th June.

There is no maximum or minimum team size, but we encourage team size of 2-5.

We will have domain experts on smart city topic who will help you with problem in domain, if you are not familiar with concept of Smart City.

Your team. The idea and associated IP belongs to you.

Yes, tangible prices but most importantly a one hour one-to-one mentorship session with co-founder of Entrepreneur First for all winners.

No, business folk, designers and anyone with bright ideas and energy and interest in Smart City is most welcome!

Your laptop and any other devices you need to demonstrate your hack such as AR/VR equipment, specific mobile phone, IoT devices, robots etc.

You are encouraged to present what you have done even if your hack is broken or you weren’t able to finish. It's okay if you didn't finish your hack—that happens all the time! Completion is only one part of the judging criteria, so you might still do well. Also, demoing is not just about the competition. It's a chance to share with others what you learned and what you tried to build—that's what hacking's all about!

You can join us just for the Happy Hour on 15th June, you can register happy hour ticket here.
